Global environmental consciousness is growing, leading to increased focus on sustainability and limiting stack gas emissions. This has been especially impactful in applications like power generation, processing, refining, and oil and gas. The growing desire to be more sustainable, coupled with a continued need for efficiency, makes reliable emission measurement essential.

Proven Pumps for Stationary Emission Measurement Applications

Stationary emission measurement, or continuous emission measurement, equipment analyzes stack emissions in a variety of applications. This process involves transferring media samples to analyzers, which measure the quantity of target gases like CO2, NOx, O2, SOx, and hydrocarbons. Correctly measuring and recording these levels is often required for regulatory compliance. Emission measurement can also aid in identifying leaks or system malfunctions, helping to prevent environmental damage and ensure media integrity. The right pump technology is crucial for transferring samples from the source to the analyzers, as well as in the analyzers themselves.

KNF Pumps Meet the Strict Requirements of Stationary Emission Applications

They offer superior leak tightness, which is essential for both preventing unwanted releases of hazardous exhaust gases and ensuring sample integrity. Strong heat resistance allows KNF pumps to handle high temperature gases commonly found in emission measurement applications. They are also condensate proof and are capable of transporting wet gases and even aerosols, which is essential when handling exhaust gases. Emission measurement pumps often operate in environments where flammable or combustible gases are present, necessitating explosion proof technology. KNF has experience with a variety of local explosion proof standards, including ATEX, NFPA/NEC, and IECEx. Pumps like the N 96, NMP 830, and N 680 Ex provide the superior leak tightness, and reliability required of these applications.

KNF Pumps Power Portable Emission Measurement in Dangerous Environments

Portable emission measurement is essential for worker safety, allowing the user to precisely monitor the environment for dangerous gases. These devices are typically small, handheld analyzers that can quickly and efficiently pull gas samples from the atmosphere to determine whether the environment is safe. Maintenance workers use portable emission measurement devices before entering confined environments like sewer systems to determine if the air is breathable. The same is true in mining applications, where workers need to continuously monitor air quality to ensure safety.

Portable emission measurement equipment requires pumps that meet very specific conditions. They must be small enough to fit inside a carriable device. However, they need to have low power consumption to ensure long battery life, as they are essential for safety. They must also be reliable and provide constant sample flow to the analyzer for accurate results. Pumps like the NMP 05 and NMS 010 are some of the products that have proven effective in these applications.

KNF Pump Features

Emission measurement applications often require handling of high temperature gases. Cooling the samples is often not possible, because it would create condensation. This would compromise sample integrity leading to inaccurate results, so gases must often be tested while still hot. KNF offers several temperature resistant and heated pumps capable of handling extreme temperature gases. These pumps are available with stainless steel or aluminum heads and specialized valves, diaphragms and mechanical connections. They can handle media temperatures of up to 240 °C (460 °F).

Any media leaked during transfer to the analyzer can cause an incorrect reading. In addition, many of the gases involved in these applications are hazardous, making potential leaks dangerous. Leaks can also allow atmospheric gases to enter the pump, mixing with the media and causing contamination. This can also lead to incorrect test results. KNF diaphragm pumps are inherently leak tight and can be tested before shipping to ensure they meet customer specifications. Double safety diaphragms, additional safety diaphragms located beneath the working diaphragm to provide a secondary seal for both the pump housing and external environment, are also available to ensure further leak tightness.

Many of the pumps used for emission measurement operate in environments where flammable or explosive gases are either constantly present or can be present in exceptional cases, making explosion proof technology essential. KNF offers a variety of explosion proof diaphragm gas pump options that can be tailored to customer needs. Our engineers have extensive experience with a variety of local and global explosion proof certification standards, including ATEX, NFPA/NEC, IECEx and others.
