KNF Pumps for Challenging Applications

Pumps for a desert climate

From sample gas pumps for analyzing process gases to emissions monitoring, the transfer of highly explosive media and the recovery of valuable gases, KNF’s bespoke solutions are used wherever it is crucial for processing media to be handled with special care. When developing these specialist pumps, the customer’s specification is always our benchmark. Based on this, we design and produce a KNF diaphragm pump that meets their exact process requirements and usage conditions, right down to the very last detail.

KNF’s specialist diaphragm pumps are primarily used to protect people and facilities against the risk of explosions and downtimes as part of a reliable warning system for hazardous gases and vapors. Other application areas include process gas measurement technology and analytical instruments for environmental protection and facility management, and equipment for handling a host of media with different properties in industrial processes.

Such demanding applications always present a fascinating challenge and often see KNF entering brand new territory. One notable example is a project we undertook for two Dutch companies that had each been commissioned by Shell to supply analytical instruments for a new plant in Qatar. Both companies opted to use KNF pumps for their instruments.

As a result, KNF finds itself supplying pumps for Pearl GTL, the world’s largest GTL (gas-to-liquids) plant, located in the Qatar desert. Pearl GTL is a joint development between Qatar Petroleum and Shell, and certainly no small-scale operation: the site itself is the size of a small town, employing thousands of people and projected to provide 8 percent of Shell’s production worldwide. There are even cinemas and other leisure facilities for workers to enjoy on site. The fuel produced at Pearl GTL is intended for use in the aviation industry as a replacement for kerosene.

A typical task in the process industry is the extraction of gas samples for analytical instruments.

70 KNF pumps are currently in operation in the plant’s analytical instruments. They have been specially designed and built to extract gas samples in line with ATEX requirements and Shell’s own standards.

Because that’s the beauty of KNF: we build pumps to meet our customers’ exact specifications. Our pumps are highly specialist, high performance products, developed and constructed for a specific customer and specific application.
