Degassing

Degassing or degasification is a method for removing dissolved gases from liquids. It plays an essential role in applications where the presence of gases in a liquid would be detrimental, such as mobile phases for HPLC and numerous organic reactions. Degassing is also important for researching and manufacturing resins, gels, plastics, and cosmetic creams.

There are various ways to degas a liquid, with vacuum degassing being one of the most common and effective methods. As defined in Henry’s Law, the amount of dissolved gas in a liquid is proportional to the pressure above the liquid. Consequently, using a vacuum pump to lower the pressure above the liquid enables the dissolved gases to escape more easily.

A vacuum degasser system consists of two components: a vessel that contains the liquid and a vacuum pump which controls the pressure in the vessel. Depending on the unique application, the pump flow rate and ultimate depth of vacuum will vary.

Considerations for selecting the optimal pump include:

  • Oil-free operation with excellent chemical compatibility
  • Appropriate flow rate in proportion to the volume of the vessel
  • Ability to process wet vapors
  • Ultimate depth of vacuum
