But where does the basic research behind these developments take place, and where are the researchers trained? One leading organic chemistry laboratory is in Bavaria, Germany, in the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).
Resistant to solvents – and much more
KNF’s lab pumps and systems have long proven indispensable to students and researchers at the FAU, as Dr. Frank Hampel, scientist and administrator, explains: “We’ve been using pumps from KNF since the mid-1990s. So, when they asked us to trial their SC 920 vacuum pump system, we were very happy to help.” “Our laboratory is ideal for rigorous testing – the equipment is constantly exposed to corrosive solvents and is sometimes roughly handled by students. We were happy with the old pumps, which are still going strong after all these years, but the new models are even better: quieter and more powerful, with a touch screen and remote control that are very easy to use.”
The vacuum pumps were later joined by KNF’s RC 900 rotary evaporator, which the laboratory also beta tested before it was launched. These two devices combine to form a quiet but powerfully effective system for distillation and rotation, with a sleek design, a minimal footprint, and intuitive handling.

According to Dr. Hampel, “KNF’s pumps have thoroughly impressed us over the years, especially in terms of their resistance to aggressive chemicals and solvents and their ability to hold a vacuum. And we really appreciate KNF’s excellent service, lifetime support, and competitive pricing.” He adds that it couldn’t be easier to carry out routine diaphragm replacements in the lab.
