The Air Quality in the Underground Parking Garages at Paris Orly Airport

An ideal place for KNF diaphragm pumps to work their magic

The underground parking garages at Paris Orly Airport are very busy in the 1970s. Until the larger Charles de Gaulle Airport opens in 1974, Orly is the main airport serving the French capital. This international hub has grown continuously since the Second World War. And during peak holiday times, countless cars would file into its underground parking garages. To prevent the proportion of carbon monoxide in the air from exceeding a certain limiting value, the parking garages need to be supplied with fresh air in good time. Thus, in 1973, special devices are installed here to continuously analyze the air – with the help of KNF vacuum pumps.

Air sampling points are installed on every story of the parking garages. Plastic tubes of up to 200 meters in length run from these points to the analyzers. The air is pumped to a distribution system, where some of it is then transferred to an analyzer through valves and a collecting pipe. A separate collecting pipe then carries the surplus air to the outside.

Three KNF diaphragm vacuum pumps each with two NK 25 E diaphragm heads are used to transfer the air within these analyzers. The heads work separately to draw in air from the connected collecting pipes and either guide it outside or onward for analysis. The findings are used to regulate the extent to which the parking garages need to have air let in or out.

Diaphragm pumps prove ideal for use in this rather uncomfortable underground location. They reliably transfer the medium at a speed of 25 l/min while ensuring that the air remains unchanged and oil free, which is particularly important during the analysis process. Since the system is in operation around the clock, it is also highly beneficial that the diaphragm pumps run maintenance-free. All in all, parking garages are an ideal setting for KNF diaphragm pumps to work their magic.
